The Colorado Buffaloes opened up the 2026 college football season with back-to-back wins over Georgia Tech and Weber State. Second-year quarterback Julian Lewis got off to a hot start, including his 366-yard, five-touchdown outing against Weber State in Week 2. But since that performance, the former four-star recruit has struggled.
Lewis threw two interceptions in a 41-7 loss against Northwestern. And this past weekend, he was benched in favor of Utah transfer Isaac Wilson to begin the second half against Baylor. Sanders is expected to start Wilson in Saturday's matchup against the No. 12 ranked Texas Tech Red Raiders, according to a report from college football insider Matt Zenitz.
Wilson, the younger brother of NFL quarterback Zach Wilson, completed 12 of his 25 pass attempts for 156 yards and one touchdown in Saturday's 23-13 loss to Baylor. Lewis went 11/16 for 75 yards before he was benched. "I’ll take the responsibility," Sanders said of the quarterback change postgame.
"It’s a decision that I made because I was trying to get us going.” While reports indicate that Wilson will start on Saturday, Sanders maintains that a decision has yet to be made. I’ve talked to Isaac, the kid is excited about the possibilities," Sanders told reporters on Tuesday. I know some people are running with the narrative that it’s already decided.
