The Arizona Diamondbacks scratched All-Star outfielder Corbin Carrol ahead of their game against the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday. To replace Carroll in the lineup, the Diamondbacks moved Tim Tawa to right field from first base and brought Ildemaro Vargas off the bench to fill in. Carroll didn't start for the Diamondbacks in Monday's series opener against the Royals either, though he came into the game as a pinch hitter in the ninth inning and logged two at-bats, striking out twice.
The three-time All-Star has only taken one trip to the injured list since making his debut in 2022, missing a couple of weeks in 2025 with a wrist fracture. The Diamondbacks could be in big trouble if Carroll misses an extended amount of time, as they are in an extremely close race for the final Wild Card spot. They currently have a spot in the postseason, though the San Diego Padres are only 0.5 games behind them.
The Padres also have an easier schedule relative other the Diamondbacks for the remainder of the season, as their remaining series against the Los Angeles Dodgers and Diamondbacks are the biggest challenges on their schedule for the remainder of the season with teams like the Colorado Rockies, San Francisco Giants and Washington Nationals still awaiting them. Arizona won't have to play the Dodgers, but still have the Padres and New York Yankees left throughout the remainder of the season. Carroll has played in nearly every game this season, and has a .800 OPS on the year with a 4.8 bWAR—both of which are the second highest mark on the team behind catcher Gabriel Moreno.
He leads all of MLB in triples due to his speed and favorable home environment, and he leads the team with 85 runs scored and 21 stolen bases. His homer total isn't quite where it was during his MVP-hopeful campaign last season, though he still has 19 round-trippers and 61 RBIs on the year so far. As one of the offense's main contributors, even a 10-day spell without Carroll could spell the end of the Diamondbacks' season.
They'll hope his injury isn't that serious, though, as they look for a their first postseason appearance since their miraculous World Series run in 2023.
