The Los Angeles Dodgers reinstated starting pitcher Tyler Glasnow from the injured list ahead of their series opener against the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday. In a corresponding move, the Dodgers optioned right-handed reliever Paul Gervase to Triple-A Oklahoma City. The Dodgers lost Glasnow to back spasms early in May after he left a game against the Houston Astros in the second inning, shortly after recording the 1,000th regular season strikeout of his career.
During his stint on the injured list, Glasnow suffered several setbacks in his progression, delaying his return for several months. Prior to his injury, the 2024 All-Star had a 2.72 ERA through 39.2 innings, and had 49 strikeouts on the year. He looked especially good in the starts leading up to his injury, striking out nine batters in consecutive outings and allowing three earned runs through 20.2 innings.
His rehab assignment went smoothly, as Glasnow cruised through the minors with relative ease. He allowed just two earned runs through 13.2 innings pitched, striking out 20 batters. He capped his rehab assignment with his best outing of the bunch, allowing one hit through 5.1 scoreless innings while striking out nine.
The Dodgers' rotation is almost full strength, as the final key starter they're missing— Shohei Ohtani — could pitch before the end of the week. As it stands, the Dodgers' rotation consists of Glasnow, Blake Snell, Tarik Skubal, Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Roki Sasaki. Paul Gervase came to the majors Aug. 21 to replace Emmet Sheehan in the bullpen, but didn't feature for the Dodgers during his stay.
The right-hander has yo-yoed between MLB and Triple-A all season, making just four appearances for the Dodgers despite a few stints in the bigs. Through his four relief showings, Gervase has a 2.35 ERA through 7.2 innings, and has eight strikeouts. His last appearance came against the San Diego Padres on July 5, where he threw two scoreless innings and had two strikeouts.
Gervase mostly held Glasnow's place during his most recent stint, as the Dodgers wanted to get Sheehan back to Triple-A to make a start on Sunday — which earned him the Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Week award.
