The three quarterbacks on the Miami Dolphins 53-man roster are newcomers this year. In March, the Dolphins released Tua Tagovailoa and signed his replacement, Malik Willis. On Sunday, Miami traded with the Green Bay Packers for Kyle McCord.
The Dolphins were awarded Brady Cook off waivers on Monday. Both backups joined Miami after the preseason, which obviously isn't ideal for first-year head coach Jeff Hafley and offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik. Second-year quarterback Quinn Ewers competed for the QB2 job in training camp.
On Saturday, the Dolphins traded Ewers, a seventh-round pick in 2025, to the Jacksonville Jaguars for a 2028 sixth-round pick. He appeared to criticize the young quarterback's performance, saying he didn't play at a level Miami needed.
I think he needed a fresh start. I think we needed a fresh start. This is a performance-based business and it was not getting done at the level it needed to get done at.
"We had a lot of conversations. I think Quinn, if he was standing here, would tell you that. I think it was time for him to move on, get a fresh start, and us to start fresh with somebody else as well.” Ewers went 1-2 as a starter for the Dolphins last season as a rookie.
He completed 66.3% of his passes for 622 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions. Ewers had a highly successful tenure as the quarterback of Texas, leading the Longhorns to the College Football Playoff semifinal in 2024. He has ambitions of being a starter in the league but will learn behind Trevor Lawrence this season.
