Earth entered its ‘bad decades’ after dinosaur-ending asteroid strike We now have a clearer picture of what happened in the decades following the asteroid impact that led to the extinction of almost all dinosaurs The mass extinction 66 million years ago is linked to an asteroid impact that formed the Chicxulub crater Decades of chaos and destruction, filled with devastating earthquakes and tsunamis, followed the asteroid strike 66 million years ago that wiped out all dinosaurs apart from birds. The long-term global chaos inflicted by the Chicxulub asteroid, which was up to 15 kilometres in diameter and struck what is now the Gulf of Mexico, has been revealed through analysis of sediments preserved on the New Jersey coast, thousands of kilometres away from the impact crater.

It has become increasingly apparent in recent years that the asteroid’s effects weren’t confined to a single, disastrously bad day, but instead lasted a lot longer. For instance, the deformation of the crust to a depth of 35 kilometres left the impact site hot for millions of years. Receive a weekly dose of discovery in your inbox.
