Tennessee Titans quarterback Cam Ward’s rookie season was equally optimistic and maddening. The 2025 No. 1 overall pick showed flashes of potential, but they were often overshadowed by the moments of questionable decision-making, missed open throws, and wild inconsistency. So the Titans gave Ward some help this offseason.
They drafted Ohio State wide receiver Carnell Tate No. 4 overall back in April and signed 1,000-yard wideout Wan’dale Robinson from the New York Giants to pair with former 1,000-yard WR Calvin Ridley, and promising second-year pass-catchers Elic Ayomanor and Chimere Dike. But so far through two preseason games, the results just haven’t been there. And some are questioning whether Ward has progressed any from his up-and-down rookie year.
In fact, ESPN’s Dan Graziano believes it’s time for Titans fans to be worried about the lack of tangible growth from Ward as he heads into his second season. The expectations will be higher because there won’t be as many excuses. Yes, a little bit of alarming performance here in the first two preseason games. … We don’t know what we’re looking at exactly, but if you’re a Titans fan, you’d like to see better.” To Graziano’s point, it’s just the preseason, and no one knows how much effort Ward is actually putting in.
Through two preseason showings, Ward has completed 13 of 24 passes (54.1 completion percentage) for 126 yards. While not terrible numbers, they came against mostly second- and third-stringers. It’s fair to expect more from Ward, who set the college football world on fire during his lone season at Miami when he threw for 4,313 yards, 39 touchdowns, and seven interceptions.
When the regular season starts, the pressure on Ward’s shoulders will be turned all the way to 11. He’s only 24, so it’s unlikely the Titans will give up on him this early. But something has to give if the results don’t follow.
