On Sunday, LSU had a plan in place to sign tight end Dae’Quan Wright, who spent time this summer with the Cleveland Browns. The decision for the Tigers to sign Wright was controversial for a couple of reasons. For one, he spent time in the NFL before returning to the college level.
Secondly, he played for new LSU head coach Lane Kiffin at Ole Miss last season. The SEC has an intraconference transfer rule that is supposed to stop athletes from transferring within the conference unless the players do so during the spring transfer portal window. He's transferring from the Browns. On Monday, LSU doubled down on adding former Ole Miss players who played in the NFL this summer. Per Hayes Fawcett of Rivals, defensive lineman Zxavian Harris is set to join the Tigers.
Harris, who recorded 58 tackles and three sacks with the Rebels last season, spent time with the New Orleans Saints. He was waived by the Saints on Aug. 8. Per On3, rival schools in the SEC would like to see the conference punish LSU for trying to go around the league's transfer rule.
The Tigers plan to fight to keep Wright on their roster for the fall. In addition to Wright, LSU has Harris joining the program in a similar boat. Earlier this month, Kiffin argued that players who get a fifth year of eligibility should be free to play for whatever program they wish.
