Florida State officially parted ways with head coach Mike Norvell on Sunday. The program said FSU president Richard McCullough informed Norvell of a coaching change the day after FSU lost 36-24 to Clemson. Director of scouting Rick Stockstill will serve as the interim head coach.
It was also announced shortly after that defensive coordinator Tony White would also be leaving his role. "We have made the decision to change the leadership of our football program," McCullough said in a school statement. "We thank Mike Norvell for his commitment and service to Florida State and wish him and his family the very best.
We understand the deep passion of Seminole fans and share their high expectations for this program. We are confident in Rick Stockstill's ability to provide steady leadership during this transition. We will conduct a thorough national search for the program's next leader, someone who embraces Florida State's tradition of championship athletics and our standard of excellence." The Seminoles allowed 123 combined points over a three-game losing streak before firing Norvell.
They fell to 3-5 with a 1-4 record in ACC play. It's an unceremonious downfall for a program that won 13 games in 2023 before getting excluded from the College Football Playoff. Despite losing 63-3 to Georgia in the Orange Bowl, Florida State awarded Norvell an eight-year extension worth more than $84 million.
The Seminoles have since gone 10-21, dropping Norvell's record to 41-39 since taking over as head coach in 2020. ESPN's Pete Thamel noted that Norvell is due a $50.3 million buyout. Stockstill, an FSU alum, went 113-111 during 18 seasons as Middle Tennessee State's head coach.
He returned to his alma mater before the 2024 season. Florida State said it will "immediately" begin a search for its next head coach.
