Florida State fans were chanted for the firing of head coach Mike Norvell at the conclusion of a 27-24 loss at home to No. 19 SMU on Monday night. Norvell was on the hot seat last season, but FSU didn't have the funds to make a coaching change thanks to a hefty buyout. The writing seems to be on the wall for Norvell, who has the Noles 1-1 before traveling to play No. 12 Alabama on Sept. 19.
Per Pete Nakos of On3, there are a few complications for Florida State to consider if they want to part ways with Norvell this year. His buyout stands to cost FSU nearly $49 million, but the total cost of making a sweeping change to the coaching staff and building a new roster would have a price around $100 million. Norvell is 39-35 overall and 22-27 in ACC play during his time with the Seminoles. His best season came in 2023 when FSU finished 13-1 overall and 8-0 in ACC play. However, the Noles have won just eight games since 2023.
During his postgame news conference on Monday night, Norvell said he noticed the FSU fan base booing the team at the end of the loss to SMU, and that it was the team's job to play better so they weren't faced with that type of reaction. "I can tell you that our players, our coaches, everybody within the program has the highest of expectations and we want to be successful and that's what we work for," Novell said, via USA Today. "That's what we work towards.
The passion of this place, it's what makes it incredible. If you don't want to get booed, continue to play, continue to work and play better. We got booed a week ago on a 3rd down, then converted on 4th down and then cheering, it's all part of it.
That's a part of, what we get the opportunity to do and just maintain our focus on our job and don't get distracted by that either." Norvell could earn some grace with an upset of Alabama, something FSU was able to do in last year's season opener.
