A reunion between the New York Knicks and former center Ariel Hukporti quickly turned emotional Monday night. The young big man suffered a serious injury in his Philadelphia 76ers debut. Hukporti went down just five minutes into Philadelphia's preseason opener against the Knicks.
The injury occurred without contact while he was defending Karl-Anthony Towns. Hukporti immediately grabbed the back of his right leg and needed assistance getting off the court. The timing could not be worse for Philadelphia.
The Sixers signed Hukporti to a one-year, $3.4 million contract during the offseason specifically to compete for backup center minutes behind Joel Embiid. With Adem Bona already dealing with a foot sprain, losing Hukporti could leave Philadelphia with a major shortage of reliable depth in the frontcourt. Philadelphia was already forced into unusual lineups during Monday's 120-97 victory over New York.
Jabari Walker was essentially the team's only healthy traditional center available, while Nick Nurse experimented with smaller lineups. A long-term Hukporti absence could therefore create an even bigger problem once the regular season begins. For the Knicks, the injury carried an added emotional weight.
Hukporti spent his first two NBA seasons in New York and was part of the Knicks' 2026 championship team. He appeared in 54 regular-season games and 10 playoff contests during the title run. That connection was evident immediately.
Towns was among the Knicks players who helped Hukporti off the court. For a player entering Philadelphia with an opportunity to establish himself, the injury is a devastating setback. For the Knicks, seeing one of their former champions go down against them made an otherwise routine preseason game much more difficult to watch.
