Former Dallas Mavericks assistant coach Phil Handy is reportedly joining the Philadelphia 76ers coaching staff next season, according to a report from ESPN's Marc Spears on X. Handy has won three NBA championships while coaching within three different franchises: the Los Angeles Lakers, Toronto Raptors and Cleveland Cavaliers. His first NBA championship was with the Cavaliers in 2016, then the Raptors in 2019 and most recently with the Lakers in 2020.
He spent the 2024-25 season away from the NBA and served as the head coach of the Mist Basketball Club in the Unrivaled Basketball League. Handy returned to the NBA last season as an assistant coach for the Mavericks. Handy is familiar with both 76ers head coach Nick Nurse and new superstar LeBron James.
Handy and James spent multiple years together on the Lakers and Cavaliers, and both were part of the Cavaliers' 2016 NBA championship team and the Lakers' 2020 NBA championship team. Meanwhile, Nurse and Handy worked together during the 2018-19 season on the Raptors. Philadelphia has made two big personnel moves this offseason.
In addition to hiring Handy, the 76ers reportedly hired Tommy Balcetis to a front-office role this summer.
