After hitting the free agent market over two months ago, former New York Rangers Carson Soucy has now gotten a step closer to changing that. The Columbus Blue Jackets have announced that they have signed Soucy to a professional tryout (PTO) agreement. With this, Soucy will now be participating in Columbus' training camp.
Seeing Soucy sign a PTO with the Blue Jackets is interesting, as they are one of the Rangers' Metropolitan Division rivals. Now, it will be intriguing to see if he can impress during his PTO and earn a contract for the season from the Blue Jackets. With Soucy being a solid shutdown veteran defenseman, it is certainly possible that he could end up being signed by Columbus for the season.
If he lands a deal for the 2026-27 campaign, he would give the Blue Jackets another option to work with on both their bottom pairing and penalty kill. Soucy was acquired by the Rangers during the 2024-25 season from the Vancouver Canucks. From there, the eight-year NHL veteran posted four goals, seven assists, 11 points, 100 hits, and a plus-6 rating in 62 games with the Rangers over two seasons.
Soucy's time with the Rangers ended during the middle of last season when he was traded to the New York Islanders in exchange for a 2026 third-round pick.
