As Japan’s legally mandated disability employment quota at private companies was raised from 2.5% of their total workforce to 2.7% in July, Fukuoka Prefecture has introduced an initiative to help businesses learn from companies already taking the lead. Under the prefecture’s program, launched this year, those in charge of human resources at participating firms visit model companies and receive advice on how to create workplaces where people with disabilities can make the most of what they can do — and on how to create an environment in which they will want to stay. One such model company is Trial Benefits, a unit of major discount-store operator Trial Holdings, based in the city of Fukuoka.
Trial Benefits is a specially designated subsidiary that promotes employing people with disabilities within the Trial Holdings group.
