The New York Giants cut veteran wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. three games into the 2026 NFL season. The team released Beckham in order to free up a spot on the 53-man active roster for WR/punt returner Braxton Berrios, who had reached his limit for practice squad elevations. Berrios suffered a foot injury during the Giants' Week 4 win over the Arizona Cardinals.
The team placed him on injured reserve Monday, ruling him out for at least the next four games. The Giants now have just four wide receivers on the active roster: Malik Nabers, Malachi Fields, Darnell Mooney and Charlie Jones. The team also has Dalen Cambre and Jalin Hyatt on the practice squad.
In response to this news, NFL fans flooded social media with comments about Beckham's release. "They cut OBJ just to have his replacement get hurt and go on IR in his 1st game," one wrote. "I wonder if they bring OBJ back," another said.
"Releasing Odell was such a stupid move," another added. "Do we think Odell picks the phone up?" another asked. Beckham was ineffective in his first three games with the Giants, failing to reel in his lone target of the year.
Head coach John Harbaugh explained that it was this lack of production that ultimately led to his release.
