The New York Giants are set to start Jameis Winston against the Tennessee Titans in Week 3 after quarterback Jaxson Dart suffered a knee injury that will require surgery, ending his chances of returning in the regular season. Winston didn't play well in relief of Dart in the Giants' 28-6 loss to the Los Angeles Rams on Monday night. He went 11 of 27 passing for 111 yards and one interception.
New York will hope Winston can play better at home against the Titans with a playbook tailored to his skill set. Winston does better staying in the pocket. He's set to be Winston's backup against the Titans. "The Giants signed QB Jake Haener to the active roster and he’ll be the backup on Sunday," Rapoport posted on X. New York is expected to look at adding outside help at quarterback this season.
The Giants could add a veteran free agent like Jimmy Garoppolo or trade for a quarterback like J.J. McCarthy, who might do better with a fresh start away from the Minnesota Vikings. When speaking to reporters earlier this week, Giants head coach John Harbaugh praised Winston for his ability to be a strong passing quarterback.
He believes it'll be easier to build around his skill set when the Giants play the Titans. "I mean, that's – to me, a big part of it is building a game plan now for (quarterback) Jameis (Winston)," Harbaugh said, via the Giants' website. So, build the game plan for Jameis to suit his skill set.
The game plan this last week was built for Jaxson, obviously. So, this will be an opportunity to do that, and that's exactly what we'll do." Winston, the No. 1 pick in the 2015 draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, is 36-53 as a starter in the league. He went 0-2 as a starter for the Giants last season.
