New York Giants wide receiver Calvin Austin III suffered what's being reported as a "serious knee injury" during Tuesday's training camp practice. The recent free-agent signee went down during a 1-on-1 drill and immediately grabbed at his right knee, according to reporters on the scene. He was carted off the field.
The Giants signed Austin, a former Pittsburgh Steelers pass catcher, on a one-year, $1.5 million contract earlier this offseason. Giants offensive coordinator Matt Nagy was asked about Austin's injury after practice. While he was unable to provide an update, he did talk about the team's "next-man-up" mentality.
"It would be a disservice to him if I said it wasn't a blow," Nagy told reporters. "But I think the beautiful part of what [head coach John Harbaugh] has done with us as a staff and as a team — his message this whole time has been positivity. The next guy's gotta step up and play." The "next guys" up include veteran wide receivers Braxton Berrios and Odell Beckham Jr. — both of whom Nagy praised after Tuesday's practice session.
The Giants' wide receiver room also features Malik Nabers, Darius Slayton, Darnell Mooney and Malachi Fields. The Giants will begin their regular-season schedule with a Week 1 matchup against the Dallas Cowboys on Sept. 13.
