When a starting NFL quarterback goes down for the season, there's always plenty of conversation around who could replace him. Will a quarterback be traded? Will someone be elevated from the practice squad?
Will a former Pro Bowler past his prime come out of retirement? (We're looking at you, Philip Rivers.) Ever since it was announced on Tuesday that New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart would miss the rest of his sophomore season with a knee injury damaging his MCL, PCL, and meniscus he suffered in the Week 2 loss to the Los Angeles Rams on Monday night, there's been a multitude of reports coming out about who could replace him in New York. The list started out with as many as six names, but the possible replacements has dwindled down to just two names as of Sunday, Fox's Jay Glazer reported. Right now, the Giants are focusing in on potentially bringing in Justin Fields from the Kansas City Chiefs or free agent Jimmy Garoppolo.
Fields is a lost soul who has yet to find a consistent home in the NFL. He's already tried to make New York home by playing for the Jets last season, one that was filled with controversies and injuries. He now sits behind Patrick Mahomes in Kansas City.
A starting role would obviously be much more intriguing for Fields, but he may not be the right fit. He's attempted to be a starting quarterback for three different NFL teams thus far — let's give it up and let him be a backup quarterback for a while. Garoppolo has plenty of good NFL experience, but it's all in the past.
He hasn't started in the majority of a season since 2022 with the 49ers — and, it's important to note he wasn't even named the starter at the beginning of the season. The 34-year-old seems to be a better replacement for Dart than Fields, even though he will need to remember how to provide meaningful wins for a team. In the meantime, New York will rely on Jameis Winston as their starter.
The Giants did sign Jake Haener from the practice squad to serve as Winston's backup. It's not a great start to John Harbaugh's first season in New York. Additionally, Glazer noted that Cincinnati Bengals backup Joe Flacco, San Francisco 49ers backup Mac Jones and Arizona Cardinals backup Gardner Minshew are off the table now despite being previously reported as options.
