The Memphis Grizzlies aren't going to know exactly what they have in Cam Boozer after just one rookie season, but that doesn't mean expectations can't be high. So, yes, expectations are very high in this case. Boozer enters the NBA with something to prove, mainly because there are already questions about how his athletic limitations will translate to the next level.
That's the case with a lot of rookies, though. His lack of lift and quickness have been points of concern despite the impressive numbers and production that made him such a special prospect. His court sense stands out, as does his ability to create for teammates. He's also shown a shooting touch and the kind of processing speed that could help him find ways around some of the physical limitations that have raised questions about his NBA future. That's why writing off Boozer before he has even had the chance to settle into the league would be premature.
There is a possible downside, of course. If his athletic limitations become more significant at the NBA level than they appeared previously, some of the concerns surrounding his game could become very real. In that scenario, his rookie season could be much more difficult than expected.
But, there's another possibility. Boozer could make his strengths overcome his weaknesses. His feel for the game, passing ability, shooting and quick decision-making give him tools to work with, even if he doesn't immediately overwhelm opponents physically.
That's also why he has a legitimate chance to compete for Rookie of the Year. There will be an adjustment period, and he'll have to figure out what works against NBA competition.
