Hiroshima's experiment is part of a broader national trend that sees small, rural high schools recruiting students from outside their prefectures.

As rural schools in Japan face fewer prospective students amid the country’s low birth rate, the Hiroshima Prefectural Board of Education plans to allow more prefectural high schools to recruit students from across the nation next spring. The nationwide recruitment system was introduced in the spring of 2015 to help secure enrollment at schools facing fewer prospective students. This spring, 41 students from outside the prefecture enrolled at nine high schools under the system.

At the forefront of the initiative is the Geihoku branch of Kake High School in Kitahiroshima, Hiroshima Prefecture. Students arriving from outside the prefecture can immerse themselves in the area’s traditional culture and natural surroundings, while bringing new energy to the mountain community.
