President Donald Trump's approval rating among white voters has fallen 7 percentage points since the beginning of the summer, according to ActiVote polling, as other surveys have also pointed to weakening views of the president among a group central to his electoral coalition. In June, white respondents were nearly evenly divided on Trump's job performance, with 47 percent approving and 49 percent disapproving, according to ActiVote. By July, Trump's approval among the group had fallen 8 percentage points to 39 percent, while disapproval rose to 54 percent.
ActiVote's August poll found 40 percent approved and 54 percent disapproved. The August poll was based on responses from 1,000 ActiVote users between August 1 and August 31. Participants rated Trump on a five-star scale, which ActiVote converted into standard approval and disapproval percentages.
The July poll included 767 respondents, while the June poll included 478. The shift marks a change among a group that has consistently backed Trump. Fifty-five percent of white voters backed Trump in the 2024 presidential election, according to a Pew Research Center analysis of validated voters.
Pew also found that white voters made up 71 percent of the 2024 electorate. Trump's weaker standing among white voters comes amid broader softness in his national approval ratings. The latest Economist/YouGov poll, conducted August 28-31, found 36 percent of Americans approved of Trump's job performance, while 60 percent disapproved.
A Quinnipiac University poll conducted July 23-27 similarly found Trump's approval rating had fallen to the lowest level of his second term in the university's polling. The polling comes amid continued concerns about the economy and dissatisfaction with the war in Iran. The Quinnipiac survey found 60 percent of voters opposed U.S. military action in Iran, while 49 percent said they were financially worse off than a year earlier.
An Economist/YouGov poll conducted July 25-27 found Trump's three-poll average net approval among white Americans had fallen to minus 14, which YouGov said was a new low. Among white Americans without college degrees, 43 percent approved of Trump's job performance while 52 percent disapproved. According to YouGov, Trump's three-poll average net approval among the group stood at -6, down from plus 27 during the first three weeks of his second term.
