California Governor Gavin Newsom has listed his private mansion in Sacramento for sale for $7.5 million, double the price he and his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, bought it for seven years ago. The property in Fair Oaks has served as the Democrat’s base during his two terms in office, and its sale comes mere months before Newsom officially steps down in January 2027. Many have speculated about Newsom’s possible run for the presidency in 2028, though the governor has not confirmed whether he will be a candidate for the nation’s top job or not.
The sale of his California home is only likely to fuel rumors there will be an impending presidential campaign announcement. The Newsoms purchased the 12,000-square-foot Sacramento mansion in 2019 to avoid living in the official governor’s mansion, a 150-year-old property, which, until Jerry Brown decided to move into it in 2015, had been serving as a museum. An exception was the stay of Ronald Reagan, who lived there for a few months in 1967.
The mansion at 7640 Tobia Way is only 15 miles from the state Capitol, making it easy for Newsom to commute to work. When the governor bought it as a "more kid-friendly" alternative to the official Victorian home, he paid $3.7 million for it. That was just before historically low borrowing costs during the pandemic sparked a home-buying frenzy all across the country which, clashing with chronically low inventory levels, sent prices through the roof.
We do not know if, since 2019, Newsom has implemented any upgrade or changes to the home. The mansion, built in 1984, boasts several high-end amenities including a resort-style pool, a private tennis court, a cold plunge pool, and a 5,000-bottle wine cellar with its own tasting room. It has seven bedrooms and nine bathrooms, as well as three partial ones.
The sale is being managed by Matthew Hindy and Nick Sadek with Sotheby’s International Realty. "It’s a beautiful property. It’s been well maintained and holds a special charm," Hindy told Newsweek in a written statement.
The listing describes the property as "an extraordinary showcase of Santa Barbara-inspired architecture […] privately positioned along the bluffs on 8.2 acres, where sweeping views and exceptional privacy create a truly rare setting." According to the agent, "the residence offers an unparalleled combination of grandeur, comfort, and effortless entertaining." The home’s primary bathroom features two walk-in closets, dual showers and water closets, and a luxurious soaking tub, in what the listing describes as a "spa-like experience." Outdoors, the home features a private pool, cold plunge, and hot tub. There is also a four-car garage. "Some homes are beautiful in photographs, but this is one you truly have to see with your own eyes," the listing concludes.
