John Metchie III is giving the Carolina Panthers something to think about as the preseason moves along. The wide receiver was already building some momentum heading into Carolina's Week 2 preseason game, and that continued once the Panthers took the field. Metchie had been getting more chances during joint practices with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Then came the preseason game. Metchie led the Panthers with six receptions for 77 receiving yards, giving him another strong performance at an important point in the summer. He also entered the game with a pretty good chance of making Carolina's roster.
Rookie third-round pick Chris Brazzell II is out for the season, creating another opening in the receiver room. There's also a question surrounding Xavier Legette. The third-year wide receiver didn't play because of an ankle injury.
Panthers coach Canales said Legette had his ankle twisted and was dealing with some soreness in his foot. The receiver could potentially find a role in three-receiver sets alongside 2025 Offensive Rookie of the Year Tetairoa McMillan and Jalen Coker.
That's a unique spot for Metchie. Moe Moton of Bleacher Report named Metchie a "winner" in the preseason, and his recent performance makes it easy to see why. Metchie has already been making plays with the first-team offense, and then he followed that up by leading Carolina in receiving during its preseason game.

Now, the question is how much of a role he can carve out once the regular season arrives. For a player who entered the preseason looking to strengthen his position, Metchie has certainly given Carolina something to watch.
