The internet has torn into Eric Trump after he posted an image of himself wearing a hat reading “Lake America”. The Trump scion uploaded the image of himself staring into the camera, having donned a hat similar in fashion to the infamous “MAGA” cap. The image comes just a week after President Trump signed an executive order to change the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America, amid a bitter trade war between the U.S. and Canada. Eric, who did not caption the image, has repeatedly defended the president’s controversial decision on social media. However, users on X have slammed the Trump scion for sharing the picture of himself wearing the hat. New York Governor Kathy Hochul’s press office was just one of the accounts to post a reply mocking Eric’s picture. Hochul’s office posted an image of Succession character Logan Roy glowering at his son. The show follows Roy’s children as they compete to be named as the future CEO of their father’s company. Hochul’s office has previously mocked Eric through references to Succession, responding to a post shared by Trump’s third child about a U.S. passport with a screenshot from a scene in which Roy tells his children, “You are not serious people.” In response to Eric’s picture, journalist Harrison Lowman posted: “Soon to be available at the Oval office (sic) merch shop no doubt.” One X user was more blunt in their response, “This helps our grocery bill and the price of f***ing diesel!” Others even edited the image to change the message printed on the cap.
One user made the hat read: “Lake Ontario.” Another changed the message to read “Delusional,” while a third changed the cap’s message to “Fake America.” Trump signed the order to change the name of Lake Ontario on August 27 amid a trade war with Canada. Despite Trump previously announcing that the two countries had reached a “DEAL,” the U.S. eventually slapped tariffs on some imports from its northern neighbor with Canada responding with retaliatory tariffs. Apple Maps and Google Maps have both changed the name of the body of water to “Lake America” for U.S. based users, although rival brand MapQuest has doubled down on calling it by its original name. “We’re not changing it,” a spokesperson for MapQuest posted bluntly on X. Eric replied, “Shocking to see you’re still alive… I thought the iPhone 3 took you out 15 years ago.” MapQuest has continued to double down on keeping Lake Ontario’s name and has since rocketed to the top of the Apple App Store. “The people have spoken. We are working,” a spokesperson for the brand posted with a screenshot of MapQuest atop the App Store’s chart.
