This past weekend, third-year Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith was named one of the program's seven captains for the 2026 college football season. This decision means a lot to Smith, who's already secured countless individual honors in his collegiate career thus far. Smith, one of the most dominant players in the country, said he was so surprised and touched by the move that he shed some tears upon learning the news.
It caught me by surprise. That’s why I dropped a little tear," Smith said when asked if he knew he was going to be a captain. Smith's wide receiver teammate Brandon Inniss confirmed this emotional reaction when speaking to reporters on Wednesday.
"When he got called up, I just saw tears of joy," Inniss said. "It was great to see that. ... Being a leader for this team, everybody knows they're going to listen to him, just because of what he does on the field." Smith led the Big Ten in receiving in each of his first two seasons, recording 2,558 yards and 27 touchdowns on 163 catches.
Ohio State will open up its 2026 college football schedule with a matchup against Ball State on Sept. 5.
