Jerry Jones bought the Dallas Cowboys in 1989 for $140 million after striking it rich in the oil industry. Today, the Cowboys are worth $15.5 billion — the highest valuation of any team in any sport globally, let alone the NFL. Jones has won three Super Bowls with the Cowboys and built "America's Team" into one of the biggest brands in professional sports.
But he'll also turn 84 in October and has already dealt with health concerns in recent years. Naturally, the question has become: who takes over when it's all said and done? Jerry's not too worried about that.
"I don't have a succession plan, I don't," Jones told Zak Keefer of The Athletic. "One day I just won't be here to toss my two cents in." Stephen, 62, is the team's co-owner, CEO, and director of player personnel, and has worked within the franchise for most of his life.
Today, he has a hand in nearly every organizational decision and is the most obvious candidate to carry on Jerry's legacy. "From my interactions with him, Stephen doesn't have the ego his father has. That'll serve him well," said former Cowboys quarterback and Hall of Famer Troy Aikman.
For now, though, Jerry remains the face of a franchise committed to getting back on top of the NFL. The Cowboys haven't won a Super Bowl since 1995 and have been aggressive in recent years, retooling their roster in pursuit of a championship contender. Jones said back in January that his "goal in life is to retire as the owner that won the most Super Bowls." That title currently belongs to New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, who has six Super Bowl rings to Jones' three — meaning the pressure is on Jones and the Cowboys if he hopes to close that gap.
