Los Angeles Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh sounds thrilled about adding Mike McDaniel to his staff. McDaniel joins the Chargers as an offensive coordinator after coaching the Miami Dolphins for four seasons. The 43-year-old will look to help Justin Herbert take the next step and win his first playoff game after consecutive 11-win seasons under Harbaugh.
During an interview on The Stephen A. Smith Show, Harbaugh discussed how excited he was to land McDaniel this offseason. "There were so many great offensive minds out there that were available," Harbaugh said.
"To us, to me, Mike McDaniel was the very top of that list. It just keeps on giving." Harbaugh felt invigorated from a "great meeting" with the quarterbacks earlier that morning. That's all you try to do as a coach is feel like you're helping those that you coach," Harbaugh said.
"That's taking place on a daily basis here." Harbaugh later elaborated when Smith asked what makes McDaniel so special. "The proof's in the pudding. It's in the tape," Harbaugh said.
"I've just been a fan of his, watching him from afar. I never met him before, but what I saw on the tape, I knew I was gonna like him. To the point where, like, this person is just gonna have to prove that I don't like him.
It's his understanding of defense, and the personality is infectious. It rubs off on everybody." The San Francisco 49ers ranked seventh in total offense with McDaniel serving as offensive coordinator in 2021 before he landed Miami's head coaching job. In his second season, the Dolphins went 11-6 and averaged an NFL-high 401.3 yards per game.
