The Pittsburgh Steelers traded cornerback Joey Porter Jr. to the Dallas Cowboys in exchange for a 2027 sixth-round pick and a 2028 second-round pick — ending a contentious contract standoff that bled into the 2026 regular season. Porter was seeking a contract extension with the Steelers throughout the offseason as he was sidelined with a back injury. The snag in contract negotiations came with a disagreement over guaranteed money in the contract's structure, according to a report from ESPN.
That being said, Porter is reportedly willing to take the field without a new contract in Dallas. "A source confirms that — like his teammate George Pickens — newly-acquired #Cowboys cornerback Joey Porter Jr. is fine with playing in Dallas without a contract extension. He’s willing to play it out because the Cowboys are the team he most wanted to play for in leaving the Steelers," NFL insider Ed Werder reported on Thursday.
Porter did not take the field for the Steelers at any point through their first three games of the 2026 season. According to ESPN insider Adam Schefter, there's a "chance" the fourth-year cornerback makes his Cowboys debut against the Houston Texans this coming Sunday. The Cowboys-Texans matchup will kick off at 1 p.m.
