Karmelo Anthony, the teen convicted of fatally stabbing Austin Metcalf at high school track meet in Texas last year, requested a new trial Wednesday, arguing that the judge who presided over the case did not provide complete instructions to the jury. District Judge John Roach, who presided over the initial case, has been recused from the new motion, according to a report from local news outlet WFAA. Anthony, who is now 19, is currently serving a 35-year prison sentence in the case.
He claimed during his trial that the stabbing was in self-defense during a confrontation. He did not testify during his trial. Anthony's attorneys argued that in addition to providing incomplete instruction to the jury, Judge Roach enforced overly strict courtroom rules.
