Kentucky Wildcats Open at No 6 in First CFP Rankings

Kentucky opens at No. 6 in the CFP rankings as the Wildcats prepare for Saturday’s trip to No. 13 Tennessee.

Kentucky opened at No. 6 in the first College Football Playoff rankings of 2026, placing the Wildcats in position to host a first-round game if they maintain that standing. The Wildcats (7-1, 5-1 SEC) sit behind Miami, Georgia, Utah, Indiana and Alabama in Tuesday’s rankings. Kentucky was No. 9 when it first appeared in the committee’s rankings in 2018, also with a 7-1 record.

Tuesday’s placement is a snapshot, not a playoff berth. The four highest-ranked teams receive first-round byes, while seeds five through eight host opening-round games. Kentucky would face No. 11 Notre Dame in the projected bracket based on the initial rankings.

The next test comes Saturday at No. 13 Tennessee (6-2). Kentucky returns from an open date to play at Neyland Stadium after already winning road games at Texas A&M, South Carolina and Oklahoma. That road experience matters more immediately than a potential December home game.

Kentucky still has to protect its position against another ranked SEC opponent. Head coach Will Stein addressed the playoff discussion before the rankings were announced. The Wildcats trailed 10-0 before taking a 14-10 halftime lead.

Senior quarterback Kenny Minchey passed for 203 yards and a touchdown in that game. Junior tight end Willie Rodriguez caught six passes for 67 yards and scored a rushing touchdown, giving Kentucky production through the air and from the Wildcat formation. The defense has also produced decisive plays.

Senior safety Jordan Castell intercepted two passes against Oklahoma, returning one 41 yards for a touchdown. He added nine tackles and a pass breakup. Through eight games, Castell had 65 tackles and four interceptions.
