The Miami Heat signed Klay Thompson on a two-year, $13 million deal, giving him his third NBA landing spot before the 2026-27 season. Thompson was brought in as a floor-spacing outside shooter to compliment the elite Miami front court featuring Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo. And while he's not the player he once was, he still has sky-high expectations for his upcoming campaign with the Heat.
"What's the Miami Heat single-season 3-point makes record?" Thompson asked after putting on his jersey for the first time at the Heat's facilities. Thompson is one of the greatest 3-point shooters in NBA history, ranking fourth on the all-time makes list behind Steph Curry, James Harden and Ray Allen. Duncan Robinson holds the Heat's single-season 3-point record with 270 makes in 2019-20.
Thompson recorded career lows in both points per game (11.7) and 3-point percentage (39.3%) in his second season with the Dallas Mavericks last year. He'll now look to get back to his elite shooting ways with the Heat. "Klay is one of the most iconic players to ever suit up in the NBA," Heat president Pat Riley said in a statement after signing Thompson.
"A four-time battle tested World Champion who will fit perfectly into his role as an all-around player at both ends of the court. We all talk about his shooting skill, but there is so much more he brings to the game. We are blessed that Klay chose the Heat in our quest to challenge for championships."
