One of the all-time greatest coaches in NBA history has found love again, and it's with the former spouse of one of his longtime assistants. Gregg Popovich, the coach who won five NBA titles as head coach of the San Antonio Spurs, got married on Sept. 16, according to a marriage license obtained by TMZ. The other person on that marriage license?
If that last name sounds familiar, it's because it's the same as Mike Budenholzer, the longtime NBA coach who was an assistant on the Spurs from 1996 to 2013. The outlet reports that the Budenholzers split in 2016, and Popovich's wife, Erin Popovich, died in 2018 after she had been "battling an illness for an extended period," Michael C. The exact timing of the couple's romance is unknown.
"Popovich and Mary reportedly grew close in the years since, and the two were spotted together at Spurs games last season before quietly making things official at the Bexar County courthouse this month," reports Clara Awuse of Parade magazine. Popovich, who suffered a stroke in 2024, was eventually forced to step away from coaching the Spurs and now serves as the team's president of basketball operations. Given Popovich's role and Mary Barth Budenholzer's roots in Corpus Christi, Texas, it's unsurprising that they filed their marriage license in Bexar County, as San Antonio is the county seat.
The Spurs reportedly declined to comment on their franchise great's new marriage.
