Lions' Sam LaPorta Gives Concerning Update on Contract Negotiations

Detroit Lions tight end Sam LaPorta doesn't seem to have a lot of confidence that a deal will get done.

The Detroit Lions are running out of time to lock up Pro Bowl tight end Sam LaPorta, who is in the final year of his rookie deal. However, LaPorta recently shared a concerning update amidst contract negotiations. LaPorta is no longer even sure if a contract extension is still on the table, and if one is, the two sides remain very far apart.

He’s been handling it with the front office. All the advice he’s given me so far is that we just haven’t come to terms yet.” LaPorta, 25, bursted onto the scene as a rookie, recording 86 catches for 889 yards and 10 touchdowns. However, since then, his production has gone down every season.

Unfortunately, an injury was a big reason for that last season. LaPorta underwent back surgery last year that ended his season after just nine games. LaPorta seems to have finally turned a corner this year, though.

Through the first four games of the season, he has racked up 22 catches for 228 yards and two touchdowns. That puts him on pace for about 94 catches for 969 yards and nine touchdowns, which would be a career year. Only time will tell if LaPorta can keep that type of production going, but if he can, his price is only going to rise and the Lions are going to wish they locked up up sooner.

A second-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, LaPorta has recorded 208 catches for 2,332 yards and 22 touchdowns in his professional career.
