LeBron James Could Take On New Role After Sixers' Latest Injury

LeBron James could take on a new role as the Sixers search for answers while dealing with injuries in the frontcourt.

LeBron James has played just about every role imaginable throughout his legendary NBA career. The Philadelphia 76ers may soon ask him to add another responsibility to the list. Philadelphia is dealing with an injury in its frontcourt that could force head coach Nick Nurse to get creative with his rotations, potentially creating more opportunities for James to play bigger than usual.

At 41 years old, asking James to take on additional responsibilities in the frontcourt may sound unconventional. But few players in NBA history have possessed the combination of size, strength, athleticism and basketball IQ necessary to make it work. James has spent most of his career operating as a point-forward while frequently serving as his team's primary ballhandler.

However, his versatility on both sides of the ball have allowed coaches to deploy him at essentially every position depending on the matchup. Philadelphia may have no choice but to lean into that versatility even more. The Sixers built their roster with James serving as one of several players capable of initiating the offense, but injuries could force Nurse to use him differently.

Rather than exclusively functioning as a perimeter creator, James could see additional minutes defending bigger players, screening and operating closer to the basket. It wouldn't be completely unfamiliar territory. James has played stretches as a small-ball center throughout his career, most notably during his time with the Los Angeles Lakers.

His ability to rebound, defend multiple positions and initiate offense after securing the ball made those lineups difficult for opponents to match. Philadelphia could attempt something similar. The biggest question is how much the Sixers want to ask of James physically at this stage of his career.

The added wear and tear of battling opposing big men may not be worth the risk for a team that wants him at full strength for a deep playoff run. James remains one of the NBA's most unique athletes, but Philadelphia also has to consider the bigger picture. The Sixers didn't add the four-time MVP simply to survive stretches of the regular season.
