The Los Angeles Lakers are entering the first season of the post-LeBron James era, with Luka Doncic as the franchise's clear leader. The Lakers' projected 2026-27 starting lineup features Doncic, Austin Reaves, Quentin Grimes, Jake LaRavia and Walker Kessler. So, what's the ceiling for this year's squad?
When speaking to reporters at Lakers media day on Monday, Doncic gave his answer to that question. Because if that's not your goal, I don't know what you're doing here," Doncic said. Doncic added that he hopes to contend for an individual MVP trophy, but acknowledged that team accomplishments come first.
Doncic averaged a league-leading 33.5 points to go along with his 8.3 assists and 7.7 assists per game last season. Unfortunately for the Lakers, he missed the beginning of the playoffs as he dealt with a Grade 2 hamstring strain that he suffered late in the regular season. Doncic is ready to take over the team following the departure of James, who signed with the Philadelphia 76ers this past offseason.
I was in this position in my career a lot of times, so obviously it's not new to me," Doncic said.
