MAI Capital Management has acquired Waypoint Wealth Counsel, an Atlanta registered investment adviser (RIA) focused on financial planning, portfolio management and advisory work. Waypoint manages about $490m in assets and works with more than 100 client households. The business was set up in 2014 by Brad McGrew and Matthew Woods, who had previously worked at brokerage firms, banks and other RIAs.

Woods said: "Joining MAI allows us to combine the local relationships and market knowledge we have built over more than a decade with the resources of a national firm. Through MAI's platform, including its Evoke ultra-high-net worth team, we're looking forward to the added depth and investment expertise, particularly as it relates to delivering on the needs of the clients we are fortunate to serve." The firm advises affluent and ultra-high-net-worth clients, including entrepreneurs, company owners, senior executives and multigenerational families. In looking at its next phase, Waypoint sought a partner that could offer more scale and a wider set of capabilities while keeping its client relationship model in place, outlined MAI.

MAI said its planning resources, family office platform, access to alternative investments, lending services and operational infrastructure would support Waypoint in widening the advice it can offer. McGrew and Woods will continue to run Waypoint and will take on Market Leader roles at MAI. MAI CEO and chairman Rick Buoncore said: "Brad, Matthew and their team have built an exceptional firm by combining institutional-calibre services with deeply personalised relationships.

"That client-first culture aligns naturally with MAI. This acquisition gives us the opportunity to enter a market we have long viewed as strategically important, but finding the right people mattered more than simply expanding our footprint. With Waypoint, we found both an outstanding team and an opportunity-filled market." Earlier this year, Carlyle agreed to take a controlling stake in MAI, valuing the company at more than $2.8bn.

The deal will see Galway Holdings, Harvest Partners and Oak Hill Capital exit their ownership positions in MAI. MAI has 42 offices across the US and a workforce of more than 700. As of 30 June 2026, the firm had nearly $80.4bn in total assets.

"MAI Capital buys Atlanta RIA Waypoint Wealth Counsel " was originally created and published by Private Banker International, a GlobalData owned brand.
