After an impressive performance to start the season, wide receiver Malachi Toney received high praise from one of the all-time greats in Miami Hurricanes history. On Friday, Toney was part of a 45-6 rout of the Stanford Cardinal, finishing with 12 receptions for 234 yards and three touchdowns. He was quarterback Darian Mensah's favorite target, with Mensah getting the bulk of his 401 passing yards by throwing to Toney.
After witnessing Toney's latest game, former Miami Hurricanes receiver Michael Irvin praised the talented young wide receiver on his "The Locker Room Podcast." "Everything he does, his timing is so perfect, and his patience is so over the top," Irvin said. "This is the greatest receiver I've ever laid my eyes on." I wanted to give other people a chance to top that.
Nobody came close to that, and I don't think anybody every will," he said. According to Irvin, Toney is doing things he's never witnessed before on a football field at the collegiate or pro level, and he is "only going to get better" as he continues his college football career and beyond. It's high praise coming from Irvin, who won a National Championship with the Miami Hurricanes in 1987.
He went on to become a top NFL receiver, earning five Pro Bowl selections, leading the league in receiving yards in 1991, and winning three Super Bowls with a 1990s Dallas Cowboys dynasty. It's also a strong statement from Irvin, considering the season just started. Ohio State's Jeremiah Smith also had a strong start to his season, with eight receptions for 151 yards and two touchdowns in the No. 1 Buckeyes' 56-3 win over Ball State.
Some might argue that Smith will face tougher opponents on their schedule, including this Saturday's clash with No. 6 Texas. Still, Toney will have plenty of opportunities to prove Irvin right, including a big game against Notre Dame on Nov. 7 and games in the ACC. It's going to be interesting to see which of these two standout receivers has the better overall stats and performances as this college football season unfolds.
