President Donald Trump shared a map on social media Monday depicting a vastly expanded United States encompassing most of North America. The AI-generated image, posted to Truth Social, features the U.S. flag superimposed over Canada, Mexico, Greenland, Cuba, and other regional territories. The president provided no caption or text to clarify the post, and the White House has not indicated that the map represents any formal policy proposal.
The geographic scope of the map essentially covers the North American continent—which comprises 23 sovereign nations by standard definition—along with Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, and several countries and territories in the Caribbean. The post aligns with a broader pattern of recent statements from the president aimed at redefining the political boundaries of the region. Trump has previously suggested that Canada could become the 51st U.S. state and has maintained efforts to bring Greenland under American control.
Additionally, his administration has heightened diplomatic tensions with Mexico and Cuba. Newsweek reached out to the White House via email on Monday for additional comment. Some of the countries depicted in the image have already pushed back against Trump's broader territorial ambitions, even if they have not specifically responded to Monday's map.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has repeatedly rejected the idea of Canada joining the U.S. During an Oval Office meeting on May 6, Carney told Trump, “As you know from real estate, there are some places that are not for sale.” The president later responded, “Never say never.” Mexico, meanwhile, has also taken a firmer stance against U.S. pressure, with President Claudia Sheinbaum defending Mexico's sovereignty and independence amid disputes with Washington. Taking to X on Monday, Sheinbaum wrote in a translated post, "In the month of the homeland, we reaffirm that Mexico is neither nor will be a colony or protectorate of any foreign country.
Proudly we are a free, independent, and sovereign nation." Cuba also pushed back against the Trump administration’s policies. Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez accused the U.S. on Monday of subjecting the Cuban people to “collective punishment,” pointing to what he described as an energy blockade, intensified sanctions and prolonged power outages that have left some Cubans with only two or three hours of electricity a day. Rodríguez also ripped Washington for restricting fuel supplies to the island.
On Sunday, Trump also shared many apparent AI-generated images, including one suggesting New Mexico should be renamed "New America" and another declaring, "The Moon Is Ours." Earlier this year, Trump signed an executive order directing federal agencies to refer to the Gulf of Mexico as the "Gulf of America," though the change applies only to the U.S. federal government and is not recognized internationally. More recently, the president declared that Lake Ontario would be renamed "Lake America," as part of the escalating trade dispute with Canada.
