It was only two snaps, but for Marshall Manning, it was the first real entry on what figures to be a very long recruiting résumé. The 15-year-old freshman quarterback and son of Hall of Fame quarterback Peyton Manning made his high school debut Thursday night as Chattanooga (Tennessee) Baylor School defeated Brentwood (Tennessee) Academy 38-20 in a nationally televised game. Manning entered in the second quarter and immediately completed an 8-yard pass to Antwaun "Cornbread" Adams -- a four-star safety in the 2028 class -- for a first down.
He handed the ball off on his next snap and returned to the sideline. His coach, Erik Kimrey, has a bigger plan for him.
"I want Marshall to play in every game this year, even if it's just two plays like that," Kimrey said. "Hopefully, it'll be a lot more, but I felt like -- we need him next year, and he needs to get ready." Even if his recruiting process is still years away from becoming serious, Manning's presence on a varsity field is going to draw attention simply because of who he is and who came before him. Marshall is the grandson of Archie Manning, the son of Peyton Manning, the nephew of Eli Manning and the cousin of Texas quarterback Arch Manning.
Like Arch, he will have to navigate the reality that his last name makes him a national recruiting story long before he has had a chance to establish himself as a prospect. Manning is part of the 2030 class, meaning he won't be eligible to sign with a college until December 2029. That's still some 1,200 days away.
He will have opportunities throughout his freshman season to build a body of work. And given his last name, there will be no shortage of people watching. "I believe we are going to see a lot of Marshall Manning this fall," 247Sports recruiting analyst Tom Loy said.
"I expect him to get plenty of opportunities on the field to show what he can do." Loy described Manning as a confident, intelligent player who can handle the moment when called upon, while noting that his physical development will be important as he gets older (Marshall is listed at 5-foot-11). "As he continues to see the field, it'll give everyone an opportunity to truly evaluate him, both from a scouting perspective and when it comes to potential scholarship offers," Loy said. Baylor is already looking toward Manning as a potential answer at quarterback in the future.
