Miami makes College Football Playoff history with its first No. 1 ranking as the unbeaten Hurricanes chase a national title.

The Miami Hurricanes have reached a historic milestone, earning the No. 1 spot in the College Football Playoff rankings for the first time in program history. Miami topped the selection committee's initial rankings Tuesday night, marking the highest position the Hurricanes have held since the College Football Playoff began in 2014. The undefeated Hurricanes entered the rankings with an 8-0 record, ahead of No. 2 Georgia, No. 3 Utah, No. 4 Indiana and No. 5 Alabama.

According to the College Football Playoff, Miami became just the 11th program to earn the No. 1 ranking since the current selection process began. The Hurricanes are also the first Atlantic Coast Conference team to occupy the top spot since Clemson in 2017. Miami previously reached as high as No. 2 in the CFP rankings during the 2017 season but had never claimed the top position.

The historic achievement comes during an impressive season for a Hurricanes team that has emerged as a legitimate national championship contender. Miami leads the nation in scoring offense, averaging 47.6 points per game, while ranking second nationally in total offense at 534.9 yards per contest. The Hurricanes have also established themselves as one of college football's remaining unbeaten teams, joining Utah and UCLA.

According to ESPN Insights, Miami currently has an 18% chance of winning the national championship and a 25% chance of finishing the regular season undefeated. College Football Playoff selection committee chair Hunter Yurachek explained that Miami's position at the top of the rankings was widely supported among committee members. "The committee was really unanimous in that Miami was the No. 1 team in the country," Yurachek said.

Despite the historic ranking, Miami still faces significant challenges before the postseason. The Hurricanes travel to face No. 11 Notre Dame on Saturday in a matchup that could have major implications for both programs' playoff hopes. A victory would strengthen Miami's position atop the rankings while adding another quality win to its postseason résumé.

The College Football Playoff committee will release its next rankings Nov. 10, with the final 12-team field announced Dec. 6. Miami has already made history by reaching No. 1, but the Hurricanes now have an opportunity to accomplish something even more significant. With the program seeking its first national championship since 2001, maintaining its unbeaten record could put Miami in position to turn a historic regular season into a championship run.
