The Miami Hurricanes are set to face off against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Saturday in a matchup that will undoubtedly have massive ramifications on the College Football Playoff field. Unfortunately, Miami will be going into the matchup without their biggest offensive weapon, who is set to miss considerable time. Star wide receiver Malachi Toney has taken the step into being one of the best receiving threats in the country this season, ranking inside the top-five in the country in receptions, receiving yards, and receiving touchdowns on the year.
Both Toney and star quarterback Darian Mensah have played a crucial role in Miami's undefeated season thus far. But for the foreseeable future, Mensah is going to have to find other receiving threats to rely on after reports emerged on Wednesday night about the severity of Toney's ankle injury suffered during the team's practice earlier in the day. However, according to the latest report from ESPN college football insider Pete Thamel, Toney is set to undergo surgery that will sideline him for at least the next four weeks. A win against Notre Dame would certainly go a long way in ensuring that they will ultimately reach the CFP.
So it will be interesting to see just how much the Miami offense feels the absence of Toney throughout the rest of their regular season schedule. Saturday's Notre Dame-Miami matchup will start at 7:30 p.m. ET and can be viewed on NBC.
