The Michigan Wolverines made a quarterback change before hosting No. 6 Indiana on Saturday. Michigan benched Bryce Underwood after halftime of its contest against Penn State in Week 7 after throwing two interceptions in the first half. Tommy Carr went 5 of 7 passing for 47 yards in a 21-18 win over PSU.
Before playing Indiana, the Wolverines announced Carr would be the starter. During Michigan's pregame warmups on Saturday, Underwood and Carr shared a moment that went viral on social media, with both quarterbacks sharing a hug. During an appearance with Jon Jansen of the Inside Michigan Football radio program this week, Michigan offensive coordinator Jason Beck explained why the team made a switch at quarterback, believing that Carr can provide a spark for the offense. "You're just in that situation of what's best for the team right now. What do we need to do?" Beck said, via a transcription from Wolverines Wire.
"It's really hard news for one guy. It's an opportunity for another guy that knows he's always a snap away from being ready to play. And so now, you're kind of calling his number, and it's his time to go.
"So, can definitely be a difficult conversation, but just going into it, just felt it was the right time and the move needed to be made. And it did provide a spark that second half for whatever reason, and the offense was able to kind of get clicking and playing a little better." The Wolverines offense got off to a slow start under Carr against Indiana. Carr lost a fumble on UM's second drive and threw an interception on the offense's fourth possession.
The other two drives resulted in punts. For more on the NCAA, head to Newsweek Sports.
