Athletics shortstop and MLB No. 2 prospect Leo De Vries will reportedly undergo surgery on his anterior labrum, sidelining him for approximately eight months, per Bill Moriarty of A's Farm. The shortstop suffered a fair few injuries over the course of the 2026 season, being scratched from Double-A Midland's lineup numerous times due to the shoulder. The initial cause came awkwardly sliding into a bag, per Jason Burke.
Despite playing through injury for the majority of the season, De Vries had a fantastic year before the team shut him down midway through August. He played 93 games in Double-A this year, hitting 13 home runs and driving in 55 runs as well. He slashed .290/.378/.458, posting an .836 OPS—his best mark over the course of a single season since making his professional debut in the Padres' organization in 2024.
The A's received De Vries from the Padres at the 2025 trade deadline alongside a handful of pitching prospects in exchange for All-Star closing pitcher Mason Miller, who blossomed into one of the best closers in the game after moving south. De Vries headlined the deal as an 18-year-old, with right-handers Henry Baez, Eduarniel Nunez and Braden Nett accompanying him. The A's started him in High-A last year, but only needed to see 15 games before promoting him to Double-A, where he posted a .910 OPS through the final 21 games of the season.
De Vries has plenty of time to make it to the big leagues at just 19 years old, but MLB predicts he joins the A's as soon as next season. The shortstop won't play until May at the earliest, but if he puts a strong season together in the minors, he could very well make an appearance in MLB by the end of the year. The minor league baseball season won't be impacted by the impending lockout in MLB, so if he finishes strong in 2027, making it to the big leagues — which could have an elongated season due to the current bargaining attempts — he could don the green and gold before the end of the year.
