North Carolina State is searching for a new college football head coach after firing Dave Doeren last week, and Wolfpack legend Philip Rivers has emerged as a leading candidate. On Friday night, a clip arrived from AL.com's Ben Thomas with Rivers. The former NFL quarterback is now head coach of the St.
Michael Catholic High School football team in Alabama, and was asked on the field about the speculation surrounding him for the NC State job. "I mean, shoot, NC State's special to me, and you know, Coach Doeren ... what he did over 14 years and all-time winningest coach, is, a ton of respect and appreciation for how he went about it with the university," Rivers said. "There's nothing there at this point.
No, you understand, like I told you earlier in the week, understand the chatter that's out there. Gotta take it one day at a time is all I know. I'm excited about this postseason with these guys here," he said.
"You never say never, but there's nothing, nothing imminent." According to On3, sources indicated there is no timetable for a potential hiring as Rivers remains focused on finishing his high school team's season. Rivers, 44, has coached St.
Michael Catholic since 2021. He attended North Carolina State from 2000 to 2003 and became a standout player, ultimately being selected No. 4 overall in the 2004 NFL Draft by the San Diego Chargers. He then went on to achieve what many believe was a Hall of Fame-worthy career in the NFL.
While Rivers never won a Super Bowl, he was an eight-time Pro Bowl selection and ranks eighth all-time in NFL passing yards. Earlier this year, Rivers interviewed for the Buffalo Bills head coaching job. Ultimately, the team made Joe Brady the new head coach following Sean McDermott's firing.
