The first season of Blue Eye Samurai ended with the perfect teaser for a drastically different season 2. Since then, fans have spent three years waiting for Netflix's animated show to return and pick up where it left off. Thankfully, the long wait is almost over as Netflix has announced the season 2 release date and Mizu's quest for revenge is about to reach new heights.
At Anime NYC in August, it was revealed that Season 2 would arrive early next year. Now we know exactly when. Netflix has announced that Blue Eye Samurai will return on Jan. 19, 2027.
Unfortunately, the second season will have only six episodes, two fewer than the first's eight. However, the wait for a third season shouldn't be as long, since Netflix has announced plans for the series to conclude in 2028. Spoilers for Blue Eye Samurai season 1 ahead The release date trailer mainly serves as a refresher on the events of the show so far.
Season 1 introduced audiences to Mizu, a half-white, half-Japanese woman trained in swordsmanship. She disguises herself as a man and embarks on a quest to kill four European men (one of whom is her father). This culminated in a confrontation with one of those men, Abijah Fowler, who attempted to overthrow the ruling shogunate.
At the end of season 1, Fowler reveals to Mizu that the two remaining men who might be her father are in London, and we then see the pair on a ship leaving Japan. Season 2 will pick up right here, with Mizu on her way to London to finish her revenge quest. Series co-creators Amber Noizumi and Michael Green teased the show's new setting by saying this: “London in 1657 had a thriving culture of illicit activity, something that fittingly parallels our story of Japan.
Mizu will have to navigate this dark underbelly amid a puritanical society that persecuted women as witches, closed bars and theaters, and even outlawed Christmas. If you know Mizu, she doesn’t take too kindly to repression, especially if it stands in the way of her revenge.” Maya Erskine will return to voice Mizu, along with Brenda Song as Akemi, Darren Barnet as Taigen, and Masi Oka as Ringo. As some of these characters were left behind in Japan at the end of season 1, it will be interesting to see how they once again cross paths with Mizu.
