The New York Giants will have to consider bringing in outside help at quarterback after Jaxson Dart suffered a knee injury that is expected to require season-ending surgery. The Giants turned to backup quarterback Jameis Winston in the first quarter of their "Monday Night Football" contest against the Los Angeles Rams in Week 2. Winston finished the night going 11 of 27 passing for 111 yards and one interception in the 28-6 loss for the Giants.
Winston is a capable backup, but he's not a threat to lead the Giants to an NFC East championship. Dan Graziano and Jeremy Fowler of ESPN noted five quarterbacks the Giants could look to sign or trade for this season. Graziano believes New York has to add outside help, though it might be a while before a trade opens up depending on how things go during the early part of the season with the Arizona Cardinals or Las Vegas Raiders.

"Jimmy Garoppolo is a free agent," Graziano wrote. "Maybe they could talk the Steelers out of Mason Rudolph for a draft pick.
At some point this season, maybe guys such as Jacoby Brissett (Arizona) or Kirk Cousins (Las Vegas) get replaced by younger QBs and become available in trade." Fowler noted that Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy could be another option for the Giants. New York general manager Joe Schoen vetted McCarthy ahead of the 2024 draft.
The trade price for the 2024 first-round pick shouldn't be too high as league teams don't believe the Vikings plan to keep the quarterback for the long haul. The options don't look great here for the Giants at the moment. Another potential intriguing option would be for the Giants to consider calling the Falcons on Tua Tagovailoa, an inexpensive option since he's playing on a league-minimum $1.2 million contract.
Atlanta is set to start Michael Penix Jr. against the Green Bay Packers on "Thursday Night Football" in Week 3. Tagovailoa struggled in the preseason, but appeared to look better in practices before the regular season when the offensive coaching staff started to tailor the playbook for the former Miami Dolphins quarterback.
