NFL Releases Statement on 'Beverage Drinking' Celebrations After Reversed Fines

The NFL and NFLPA issued a joint statement in response to the two rescinded fines punishing "beverage drinking" celebrations.

The NFL rescinded fines for San Francisco 49ers fullback Kyle Juszczyk and Dallas Cowboys tight end Jake Ferguson — both of whom were originally punished for what the league viewed as beer chugging celebrations. Juszczyk explained that his celebration intimated him drinking out of a juice box, calling to his "Juice" nickname. Ferguson claimed his actions were a "Gatorade celebration that he previously had done on multiple occasions in practice, as the team had documented on social media," per ESPN's Adam Schefter.

In the wake of these two reversed fines, the NFL and NLFPA issued a joint statement saying players would no longer be punished for "beverage drinking" celebrations. "Recent celebrations imitating drinking a beverage will not be considered violations or result in discipline," the league wrote. "When conduct falls into a gray area, the league will contact the player and provide direction before imposing discipline." This statement comes after Juszczyk publicly pointed out what he views as hypocrisy from the NFL, which has multiple beer sponsorships.

"Even if it was beer, I don't think that should be a problem with all the beer endorsements that we have in the NFL," Juszczyk said. So even if it was beer, which it wasn't, I still felt like it wasn't an infraction."
