A scene in the film Bucking Fastard, starring the Lord of the Rings star Orlando Bloom, is courting backlash online. In the film, directed by German director Werner Herzog, Bloom’s character has a threesome scene with two actors, Rooney and Kate Mara, who are sisters in real life. The film stars Kate and Rooney as the twin sisters Jean and Joan Holbrooke, sisters who are “so close they speak in unison, love the same man, and have the same dreams,” according to the film’s description on IMDb.
The film is based on the lives of Freda and Greta Chaplin. Speaking about the scene at the San Sebastián Film Festival, Bloom said that there is such simplicity to the characters and [their] carnal desires, but also an innocence to the sisters,” as per Variety. He described the scene as a “very sincere sort of moment that was created.” On the direction of the scene, Herzog said, “There are moments when a director has to step back.” “In the love scene, I said to Orlando: ‘You are in bed, and you have two women in your arms.
How you deal with it, I cannot give instructions,” Herzog said, per Variety. Herzog said the scene is “beautiful,” because it has “such charm and depth.” Discussing the film, Bloom told Entertainment Weekly that “it refuses to judge its characters and offer any kind of easy answers.” However, the scene has been criticized online. The social media user @farminerandJesus wrote in a post on X, viewed over 60,000 times, “Now they are normalizing incest.
Why do people watch movies? It’s all trash anymore honestly.” In a thread on Reddit, one user described it as “just weird,” while another questioned, “why would the maras agree to this.” The backlash, though, was not universal. The scene in question is very brief, features no major nudity, and is played for laughs.” Meanwhile, the social media user @iconnorpop wrote in a post on X, viewed over 3 million times, “Hell yeah brother.” Kate Mara, who in the film plays Jean Holbrooke, is an Emmy nominated actress known for her breakout role in House of Cards. She also had roles in the iconic FX miniseries American Horror Story: Murder House, and films including Brokeback Mountain and Fantastic Four. Rooney Mara has been nominated for two Academy Awards for roles in 2012’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and in 2016’s Carol.
Rooney also had a supporting role in David Fincher’s 2010 film The Social Network. Freda and Greta Chaplin were identical twin sisters, born in 1943 in York, in the U.K. They were known for being inseparable, dressing and moving identically.
