Supermarket chains in a number of European countries reported suspected cyberattacks in which freezers malfunctioned on Monday, ruining food worth millions of euros. Stores in Belgium, Sweden, Ireland, Estonia and Luxembourg all reported freezers had suddenly risen in temperature. In Ireland, the refrigeration systems at 13 SuperValu stores were hit, resulting in chilled and frozen produce being thrown away as a precaution.
Musgrave, which owns SuperValu, said in a statement to Irish media that a specific model of refrigeration was affected without specifying what the issue was. Freezers at Ica and Coop shops in Sweden were turned up to as high as 55C on Monday while supermarkets in Belgium, Ahold Delhaize and Carrefour, were also affected. Last month, major French supermarkets said they were hit by a cyberattack that spiked temperatures in refrigerators.
