The Portland Fire unveiled a new team mascot during their game against the Washington Mystics at the Moda Center on Sunday. Rose, the pink glitter-breathing dragon, made her debut in front of Fire fans during halftime. Rose's name is a tribute to Portland's nickname, the "Rose City".
Just be ready to bring the heat.” During Portland's initial run as a WNBA team from 2000-2002, the franchise's mascot was Spot the Dalmation. Before the game, the Fire posted a video on social media of a hole with pink glitter that was spotted outside of the team's home stadium, the Moda Center. The Fire also urged fans to stay in their seats during halftime, which was when Rose officially made her debut.
The Fire and the Dallas Wings are the last two teams that have not secured WNBA playoff spots but have also not been eliminated from playoff contention. With only one spot remaining in this season's playoffs, Portland has an uphill battle to get to the postseason. Sitting 6.5 games behind the Wings for the eighth spot in the playoffs, the Fire must defeat the Wings on Tuesday when they go head-to-head at College Park Center.
After that, Portland has six regular-season games left to pass Dallas in the standings.
