Puka Nacua is really one of the NFL's most productive wide receivers. But, he's going into the new season with something besides big expectations hanging over him. The Los Angeles Rams star has dealt with several off-field issues over the past year, putting him in a different kind of spotlight heading into the new season.
It's a notable situation for a player whose work on the field has been difficult to ignore. Nacua entered rehab this offseason "to improve his overall behavior in every aspect of his life," according to his agent in April. Around a week earlier, he was hit with a lawsuit, although he denied the allegations.
There was also an incident during the season involving a touchdown celebration. It's just been messy, overall. Thankfully for the Rams, the injury hasn't affected his availability during training camp.
That's the off-field picture. On the field, Nacua has been a completely different story. He led the NFL with 107.2 receiving yards per game last season, and his career average of 95.3 receiving yards per game is currently on pace to become the best mark in NFL history.
He's also heading into the final year of his rookie contract without an extension in place. Sports news: Giants’ Malachi Fields Could Get a Bigger Workload That could make 2026 particularly important for Nacua. A strong season could put him in position to reset the wide receiver market when it's time for his next contract.
The talent certainly isn't in question. His production has already put him among the league's elite receivers. But CBS Sports' Zachary Pereles has Nacua on the hot seat, noting that another year of off-field struggles could make the situation more complicated.
